Solid Hardwood Flooring
For some, there's nothing quite so authentic as a solid natural block or plank floor. Our solid timber floors are a statement of quality, which goes back to Atkinson & Kirby's roots in 1903. Whilst the format is steeped in tradition, the character you can give a space with solid wood is as varied as the tonal richness of wood itself.

FAQs
Solid Hardwood Flooring
Can you glue down solid hardwood flooring?
Yes, solid hardwood flooring can be glued down, but it’s important to use the right adhesive. A flexible wood flooring adhesive allows the wood to expand and contract naturally, reducing the risk of warping. The subfloor must be level and moisture free before applying glue. While glue down installation works well on concrete subfloors, many professionals prefer the secret nail method for added stability.
Does solid wood flooring need underlay?
Underlay isn’t required for solid hardwood flooring if you’re using the secret nail method. However, if you're gluing it down, a moisture barrier underlay or damp proof membrane may be needed, especially on concrete subfloors, to prevent moisture damage. Underlay can also help with sound insulation and comfort underfoot, so it's worth considering based on your specific installation needs.
How long do solid hardwood floors last?
With proper care, solid hardwood flooring can last 50 to 100 years or more. The longevity depends on:
- The type of wood and its hardness
- How well the floor is maintained (regular cleaning and refinishing)
- The thickness of the planks (thicker boards can be sanded and refinished multiple times)
- Routine care, such as using felt pads under furniture, avoiding excessive moisture and refinishing when needed, will help extend its lifespan.
How to lay solid hardwood flooring?
Installing solid hardwood flooring takes careful preparation. First, make sure the subfloor is clean, dry and level. Solid wood can be installed using one of two methods:
- Secret nail method – Best for wooden subfloors. Boards are secured with nails or staples, ensuring stability.
- Glue down method - suitable for concrete subfloors. Use a high quality flexible adhesive to allow for natural wood expansion
Before installation, it’s essential to acclimate the flooring to the room conditions:
- Pre-finished solid wood flooring should be left in its packaging in the room where it will be laid, maintaining the same conditions it will experience after installation. This should be done for at least 72 hours before fitting.
- Unfinished solid wood flooring should be removed from packaging, and the boards should be spread out in the room for at least 5 days to allow proper acclimatisation.
Always leave an expansion gap around the perimeter to prevent warping.
Is solid wood flooring suitable for underfloor heating?
No, solid wood flooring is not suitable for use over underfloor heating systems under any circumstances. The natural expansion and contraction of solid wood due to temperature changes can lead to warping, gaps, and instability.
Why is my solid wood floor lifting?
There are a few common reasons why a solid wood floor may start lifting:
- Moisture issues – excess humidity or water exposure can cause the wood to expand and lift
- Insufficient expansion gaps – solid wood naturally expands and contracts; without the right gaps around the edges, it can buckle
- Improper installation – if boards were glued down incorrectly or nailed too tightly, they may lift over time
- Subfloor problems – an uneven or damp subfloor can lead to movement and lifting
If your floor is lifting, check for moisture issues and ensure expansion gaps are in place. You may need to replace or re-secure affected planks.
